The story of Tulkarm: the vineyard capital

Roman grape presses whose remains still stand, a festival of Nabi Yaqub, and a proverb about kubsah.

Tulkarm is nicknamed “the capital of the chosen vineyard”. In the Roman period its wine presses multiplied, and dozens of Roman grape presses spread across the town; their remains still stand today.

Among the town’s popular heritage is the annual festival of Nabi Yaqub, alongside exceptional historical, cultural and religious traditions unique in Palestine.

One local saying survives in people’s mouths: “In Tulkarm I ate kubsah for the first time.” That is how towns are told — with an old press, a festival, and a proverb kept on the tongue.
