Before 1948, the people of Jabalia sold their produce at Suq at-Turkmani east of Gaza, exchanged goods among themselves, and brought in supplies from Gaza and Hebron — especially olive oil, sweets and cloth.
They stocked up ahead of winter, and were known for farming: vegetables, citrus, fruit, almonds, figs and olives. Despite hard living conditions, their land covered their basic needs.
After 1948 the map of the market changed, but the names of crops and their markets stayed in Jabalia’s popular memory.
