Story of Faqqu'a: cactus country on the Gilboa ridge

A village on the Gilboa ridge near the Green Line, known for prickly pear cactus, with 4,410 residents in 2017.

Faqqu'a is a Palestinian village in Jenin governorate on the Gilboa ridge near the Green Line, known for the prickly pear that covers its slopes.

Local accounts derive the name from the many springs and bubbles of water in its land, or from the desert truffle, or from the nearby ruin of Fuqai'a whose large stone buildings and caves still stand.

In 1948 it hosted Syrian and Iraqi army positions and a Jordanian army guard point, and it came under occupation in 1967. The population was 3,490 in 2006 and 4,410 in 2017.
