The story of Dura: carpets that speak of hands

In the 1930s Dura was known for carpet weaving, and photographs show its women at the loom.

In the 1930s Dura, south of Hebron, was known for traditional weaving — especially carpets — and historical photographs show women of the town working this old handcraft. Weaving was then one of the town’s most important economic activities, before modern industries later expanded.

Alongside textiles, the town had markets for clothing and household goods and workshops for traditional trades and crafts, making it a commercial and craft centre for its neighbourhood.

In the memory of Dura’s families the carpet is still evidence that craft was women’s first language: a thread turning into the map of a home.
