In Yatta, south of Hebron, antiquities are scattered across the town: the Omari Mosque, the shrine of al-Khidr in the Bayt ‘Umra area, the shrine of Sattih in the centre, the remains of Qasr al-Karmal, and a mosque and church at Susiya, where ancient inscriptions and carvings were found and the floor was paved with coloured mosaics.
Part of these monuments dates to the Ottoman period, and old buildings and archaeological sites still stand among the houses.
Yet the Susiya site remains under Israeli control, out of reach of Yatta’s people — here the story is kept in memory before it is kept in stone.
