The story of Rafah: roses on the border

At the Strip’s far south: roses, olives and small workshops — and a crossing that was the only way out.

At the far south of the Gaza Strip, on the Egyptian border, lies Rafah and its land crossing — for years the only route to the world for Gaza’s people. Money sent home by Rafah’s workers abroad helped its trade flourish.

Industry is limited to simple trades — dairy, clothing, sweets — beside many small workshops. Farming covers about 30% of the town’s land, known for olives and exported roses, along with blackberries, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and citrus. The town depends on groundwater, its only water source.

Rafah’s story is the story of a road: who crosses it, and what fruit of the land they carry.
