Qalqilya’s people worked a range of trades: food industries and olive oil, dairy products, soap, glass, stone and marble.
Beside industry, the town is known for its markets — including the trade in used furniture that other governorates lack, which draws shoppers and visitors. Tourism in the district was helped by facilities such as the zoo, almost the only one of its kind in Palestine.
Qalqilya lost most of its farmland inside the armistice line after 1949, yet its farmers kept reaching their land in Jordan despite the obstacles — the story of a town that still crosses the border to its orchards.
