Story of Jenin: capital of the north above Marj Ibn Amer

The capital of the Jenin governorate and its largest city, overlooking the Jordan Valley and Marj Ibn Amer; known in antiquity as Ein Ganim, the gardens.

Jenin is a Palestinian city in the northern West Bank, some 75 km north of Jerusalem, overlooking the Jordan Valley to the east and Marj Ibn Amer to the north, at about 175 m above sea level.

Archaeologists hold that the Canaanites founded it around 2450 BCE, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It was known in antiquity as Ein Ganim, meaning the gardens, and in Roman times a village called Ginai stood on its site. The city flourished in the late Ottoman era and its first municipal council was founded in 1886.

The city had 48,479 residents in 2017 while the governorate had about 314,866; its built area covers some 21,000 dunams.
