The story of Halhul: a market on the Jerusalem road

At 1,027 metres, its place on the Jerusalem–Hebron road made it a lively market — and its stone built the town.

At 1,027 metres above sea level, five kilometres north of Hebron, Halhul is among the highest Palestinian towns. Its position on the Jerusalem–Hebron road made it a lively market for travellers, and a central fruit-and-vegetable market still sells the produce of its farmers.

Farming comes first in the local economy, then trade, then industry — almost entirely stone and marble, thanks to the quarries around the town; stone has become part of the town’s face and its houses.

It is bordered by Sa‘ir and ash-Shuyukh to the east, Beit Ummar and al-Arroub camp to the north, and Kharas and Nuba to the west, 36 km south of Jerusalem.
