Story of Burqin: home to one of the world's oldest churches

A town 4 km west of Jenin with the Byzantine Burqin (St George) church, one of the oldest in the world; named Buraqina in the Amarna letters.

Burqin is a Palestinian town 4 km south-west of Jenin, at 270 m above sea level; its land extends over 19,447 dunams while its built-up area covers 400.

Its fame comes from the Burqin (St George) church, one of the oldest churches in the world and a religious and tourist landmark for Christian pilgrims, built over Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman remains. The town appears as Buraqina in the Egyptian Amarna letters.

It had a Christian majority in earlier centuries and about 20 Christian families remain; its first municipality was founded in 1999. The population was 5,685 in 2007 and 7,126 in 2017.
