Barta'a is an Arab village in the northern Triangle on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank, north-west of Jenin and south of Haifa. Since 1949 it has been divided into a western part administered by Israel's Basma regional council and an eastern part in the West Bank run by the Palestinian Barta'a village council. The name is thought to derive from the Syriac 'Barta' (a ewe) or 'Perta' (fertility), and the village was also known as Wadi al-Mai, al-Hanana and Ras al-Ain. Local tradition attributes the name to Sheikh Muhammad al-Barta'awi, a companion of Saladin who settled on the village's high ground to watch Crusader movement along the coast.
