Story of Khirbet al-Matla: an old rural site south-east of Jenin

A hamlet 24 km south-east of Jenin at about 500 metres above sea level, tied to the rain-fed farming settlement that shaped the Marj Ibn Amer countryside.

Khirbet al-Matla is a rural site in Jenin governorate, 24 km south-east of the city and about 500 metres above sea level. Like many Palestinian khirbas, it grew as a small dwelling or a farming extension of larger villages, relying on rain-fed agriculture and herding. Its fertile soil, groundwater and position on old rural tracks suggest long, successive human use, traces of which survive as stone foundations and simple walls; in the Ottoman period it fell under the rural administration of the Jenin sub-district.
