Story of al-Khaljan: a small village between Ya'bad and Barta'a

About 20 km west of Jenin, al-Khaljan was named after a plot known as Khallat al-Jan and is home to some 817 people from three families.

Al-Khaljan is a Palestinian village in Jenin governorate, about 20 km west of the city, bordered by Turat al-Gharbiyya to the north, Barta'a to the west and Ya'bad to the east. Tradition says its 120 houses (in 2012) were built on a plot called Khallat al-Jan, later shortened to al-Khaljan. The village council counted some 817 residents in 2012 from three families — al-Khatib, al-Manasra (refugees of 1948) and al-Amarina (from neighbouring Ya'bad) — with the al-Khatib family forming the majority. Most people work in farming or free enterprise, and the village has a relatively high rate of university education.
