Story of al-Hashimiyya: the village once called al-Barid

A village west of Jenin formerly known as al-Barid and renamed al-Hashimiyya under Jordanian rule, with 2,721 dunums of land and a spring used for drinking and irrigation.

Al-Hashimiyya is a Palestinian village west of Jenin, formerly called al-Barid and renamed during Jordanian rule after 1948. An 8 km local road links it to the main highway, and it stands 350 metres above sea level on 2,721 dunums bordered by Kafr Qud, Arraba, Araqa and al-Yamun. Its population grew from 153 in 1922 to about 1,450 in 2020; many residents trace their origins to Arraba and most belong to the Jarrar family. The village has the 'Ain al-Malih spring, a mosque and a government elementary school, and is ringed by hundreds of carob trees.
